Brittany Bay Park
A living shoreline for resiliency
Inspire's design for Brittany Bay Park in the city of Miami Beach demonstrates resilience in action. Miami Beach faces some of the most significant climate and sea-level‑rise challenges in the nation, so residents and city leaders are deeply invested in solutions that blend ecological restoration with high‑quality public amenities. The City commissioned a master plan and construction‑ready landscape design for its 1,000-foot-long, 130-foot-wide urban waterfront park that would replace a failing seawall and address sea level rise concerns. The park’s location along the bay offered a prime opportunity to showcase strategies that help protect against future flooding while strengthening the community’s connection to the water.
Inspire created a “living shoreline” environment between the existing seawall and the new, higher wall; this innovative buffer zone features daily tidal flushing via inlets at the north and south ends of the basin, creating a habitat that supports mangroves and other tidal plant species. A pedestrian promenade parallels the new seawall, and three overlooks that extend across the living shoreline to the water’s edge. The plan includes plantings of red, black, and white mangroves, as well as preserved mangroves and buttonwoods that bring park users into close contact with native coastal ecology. Inspire provided full master planning and landscape architectural construction documents to guide implementation. Inspire’s technical team also provided extensive CADD production to ensure precise engineering and seamless coordination among disciplines, including civil, structural, and environmental consultants.
